Trees DeepContrary to popular beliefs - some of those being of my parents, studying fashion is not sewing and walks in the park, or runways. It's intense, soul nurturing and effortlessly sleepless. I've never enjoyed studying for anything before but History of Fashion smoothly romanced me with its eloquent infliction of feminine attested knowledge. I'm not a RA RA FLING MY BRA - type feminist but after reading Adiche's WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS I feel refreshed. Refreshed from the socially abstained and stale opinion of feminists being crazy women, using trivial things to guilt men and non feminists into either being a feminist or feeling an intrinsic guilt for the woes and wrongs done to women by society.

As if current members had any say in the building of the culture that lead to the state of inequality that plagued women for centuries. While I agree with Adiche's argument that "culture does not make people, people make culture", we are indeed in need of a global referendum, acknowledging the culture of the past that has been carried into the present but hidden behind excuses of ethnicity and poverty. I agree that we should change our culture, starting with the

exuberant assumption that feminist = crazy bitch that's going to rip my head off with illogical and unsupported arguments or thot posting trap pics with irrelevant "love yourself" captions. That the inequality endured by women has not disintegrated completed but rather retired from the main stage to airily creep backstage amongst the hustle of the working crowd. Subtly unfelt by the men who focus on the stage and not the reality that lies outside of the lime light. This sudden burst of feminism came while I was

trees deep in my newfound love affair with History of Fashion, it struck me with the vigor of a matured cheese. Easy but pugnent.
Feminist = a male or female who believes in the social, political and economical equality of the sexes, who believes that any job or task should be given to the person who does it best, be they male or female, be it cooking or fixing cars. [ -Adiche] |
"Women[in ancient Minoan society]occupied a higher place in society than in most early cultures. They enjoyed equality with men, and they were not secluded in the household but participated with men in public festivals. They engaged in athletics, often joining men in a favorite Minoan sport, vaulting over bulls. The position of women in Minoan civilization was an exception in the ancient world, possibly reflecting the importance of female deities. The major figure in Minoan religion was the mother goddess."
Just like actual matured cheese, the pungency of this immediately sparked a less than ladylike conversational debate about the link between a main female deity and the equality of women in society as opposed to others that featured female deities in convince or supporting roles and saw male deities take center stage, excluding women from the capabilities of men, like the smell of popcorn in a classroom -this link between these factors cannot be ignored.
Consider for a moment the construct of a society - of a Europe, that didn't assume the gender of its only deity was/is a male. A deity who gave its only human child to the world- which has ruefully been the task of a women, one which they have had to sacrifice many privileges for opposed to their opposite who was seen no differently regardless of whether his offspring bore breath or not. It would insufferable to not ask if the ancients automatically assumed a gender for a purposefully genderless deity, for the convince and assurance of the dominating gender, subtly fighting its latter for control? We definitely cannot change the actions of expired ghosts but perhaps it's of worth to change the current culture of thinking, starting with genderless deities. Social revolution lies in winning the battles spread far, wide and deep within the cobwebbed sections of culture that we only dare touch on in 140 characters or less. Perhaps if we see all powerful deities as genderless or even worse- female, we could achieve social and economical equilibrium or at least feel like it conscious and unconsciously. |
