My Fickle FriendFebruary 2016 I have a fickle friend. She's sort of the mother in our group of friends and she's also just a unique being. She once told me she believes that dirty school shoes are beautiful. She says that she's a walking contradiction and even though she's not vegetarian she barely eats meat. This makes her crazy anyway because "Who doesn't like biltong!?"

She told us that she's never had a birthday party so we decided that for her 18th we were going to throw her a surprise birthday party. We started planning months before but we quickly realised that throwing a fancy "Ra-Ra" typa party with little to no budget was rather difficult. So instead, we decided to have a surprise dinner for her. We all met at The Grand Life Café at 6 sharp - and of course I was late but nevertheless we all quaintly seated ourselves in a booth at the back of the restaurant and made enough noise in 10 minutes to let everyone else around us know that 'This is squad yo'. We asked her Mom to lie to her about going to a family event and then unknowingly bring her to the restaurant. At around 7 her mom texted us telling us that she was parking the car. We wanted to look inconspicuous so naturally we all held our menus up to our faces and hid behind them because really that's how everybody does it these days. She walked in and we popped out and shouted "SURPRISE!!". She was REALLY surprised and I think we were also surprised that we actually pulled it off. I didn't think it would be so difficult to keep such a simple secret but when you see a person everyday and you have the typa relationship where you tell them everything, all the time it becomes really hard to withhold something. Nonetheless, we all did and it really was grand although I feel like we've set the bar really high for each other now. There's 5 five of us in the group - that's one birthday down. 4 more to go. . .mmmmmm.
