In history every new movement in architecture, interior or fashion was either 1. Brought on by some revolutionary social or political change CC: Channel, Dior after WW1 2. A revolt against the previous style CC: Ettorre Sotsass. Minimalism has ruled the plains of runways, magazines and media since Usher and R&B stoped being a thing. Marc Jacobs Fall 18 seems to be the first revolt against the plain and simplistic zeitgeist. With the decade coming to a close and globalization and fast fashion having set themselves as a steady element in our modern culture, it will be hard to prove the power of one show and its advocation of a

new style. New technologies and the ease of access to it have made it easier for people to surcome to their own fashion styles. We can't classify our decade in one style of dress because unlike the 50’s,60’s and 70’s modern fashion has so many new avenues that it would be hard to pick one or two styles as the dress for the decade.
There is however, a hierarchy- as there always will be where man lives. Fast fashion is a trickle down system. The top luxury fashion labels set the tone and brands like ZARA and H&M cheapen that tone and provide it to the people. Brands like Mr Price take what ZARA and H&M have done and |
make it even cheeper. Yes there has been a shift in power and influencers and media stars give a contribution to the tone but they are only personalising what the top brands have given them.
SO while Jacob's revolt might fade into the wash of the media, I truly believe it is the first sign of a style change and they may not have as great an impact as Memphis did refusing Bauhaus functionalism. They will be felt in the small minute circles of fashion people who will feel it and forward it and very slowly but surely there will be a 360 change. |
Relentless minimalism and rose gold everything has left little room for maximalist design. Until Marc Jacobs. He has been setting a tone of expecting the unexpected even before they decided to use cultural apropriation (which a concept most don’t really grasp so I wrote an article on it THE INTRINSIC SUNBAKE) to shock us into giving them attention. Their Fall 18 show was no different. With Hats larger than the unwavering support of the ANC, coats perhaps big enough to hide a Gupta or two, eye shadow glittery enough for the likes of Hananh Montanna and every Indian bride ever, accessories covered in rhinestones and just the right amount metallic details to bring sexy back, Marc Jacobs' refusal against minimalism is all the rage in fashion right now. Is it the dawn of a new style decade or just a display of relentless artist freedom. . .
