Today I woke up and, through pure modernist instincts, the first thing I did was check my Instagram - #AltonSterling. My FOMO over the Fendi 90Year celebration show at the Trevi Fountain was quickly squashed by growing anger and sadness. Alton Sterling is another unarmed black man who was killed for no evidential reason. #BlackLivesMatter was scattered across my feed like milk spilt on the kitchen floor. Just like spilt milk in my house, it was being cried over. Whilst these events and occurrences are tragic and is most definitely genocide, I am unadjective-ably angry by the ignorance of people. Not white people but people in general. Especially people like Tomi Lahren and Ben Shapiro but that's a topic for another day so before this turns into hate speech, I'll promptly address my subtly built up anger.

I'm all for #BlackLivesMater but it just upsets me that so many black Americans have to be killed for black lives to matter. Perhaps I'm just utterly tired of the overwhelming American Influence and perhaps my anger is not warranted at all. Yet, it stands that as African Americans get killed and the world is in uproar and everyone wants to promote equality and tra la la, African black people are being killed daily. So why don't I see #BlackLivesMatter applying to the lives lost in Africa?
The U.N. has confirmed that in Somalia today there are over 5, 000 documented child soldiers. Islamic parties like Boko Harram and Al Shabaab have killed an estimated 20, 000 people and displaced 2. 6 million people each in the past 7 years. In Kenya people are having similar issues with the police whereby the police carry out "summary executions" and "enforced disappearances". |
People are being killed for not being Muslim, for being deemed dangerous to the ruling political party and many are detained simply because they are refugees. My point here is that black people in America are not the only ones facing issues with the police. I agree that #AllLivesMatter is a redundant argument when it comes to the American movement but when you look at it in the sense that #AllBackLivesMatter, it is more sensible. #AllBlackLivesMattter - not just the American ones. Let's give a fuck about Africa instead of tossing it to the side and only remembering it when we see ads endorsed by celebrities ,who flaunt themselves and tell you to help the starving children in Africa. Only to conveniently forget that the starving children don't want your pity or your patronising after-thoughts. All they want is for you to care about them the way the world cares about young Tamir Rice. Well atleast I do.
