CHANNEL HAUTE COUTURE SS17
It is no doubt that Channel was not the only dazzling show at the SS17 Couture week but they undoubtedly stole the show. They were most memorable for their uncompromising silhouettes and dazzling colours. A fine example of Victorian Minimalism, a style we've seen designers hint at of but never so wholesomely accomplished until CHANNEL HC SS17.
The show started with many tweed dress suits that screamed "Classic old rich lady" but I suppose these silhouettes are a must to keep the mantra of the classical Channel image alive. The show digressed and we saw a more modern women. The straight silhouettes with broad shoulders embodied the essence of the modern women, strong but still feminine. The essential touches of light, pastel colours provided that feminist touch that contrasted the broad shoulders and straight silhouettes. It would only be naive of me to not mention the particulate use of glitter, embroidery and sequins. Lagerfeld - Karl Lagerfeld the creative director for Channel, has always soothed the classic needs of Channel and this show was no different. The use of soft pinks, peaches, white, black, silver and gold only feed into what I call Victorian Minimalism. The styles of the Victorian period was characteristically overbearing.

It was most notable in the homes of the rich and royal who took to flaunting their wealth by over decorating and over ornamenting every inch of space in their property. I call Lagerfeld's creation a fine example of Victorian minimalism as it strives for classic minimalism with it's arguably simplistic silhouettes but is still reminiscent of Victorian styles with it's unsubtle embroidery, sparkle, glitter and glam. It's almost ectremly overbearing but the use of clam minimalst colours turn the overbearing into glamourous.
Perhaps this is why for so many years Lagerfeld has been able to wow us with his seasonal shows because he still holds that uber classic sense of feminism and couture whilst merging it with a bedazzled version of the newest 'in style'-minimalism. Grated some looks are beyond its time but regardless of any other element all the looks hold a sense of elegant glamour cannot be denied. |
